hai chechi, am happy to hear that this film got a commercial release. Hats off to prithvi for taking the distribution. Is that additional scenes were also shot by that foriener?
Hi.. I had watched Kerala Cafe and loved the “Happy Journey”. Congratulations for that. Now, I heard you saying in one of the interviews about the pirated CDs etc. Hence, my doubt is if the DVD/online version of Manjadikuru will be released so that I can purchase it. Best of luck for the future.
What i Say to you in my own following words, my Own Flowering and flowing words is just about the remarkable achievement you forced into Malayalam cinema.
And these are my Facebook reviews.
” LManjadikuru Master Pease!! Emma padaman. If you ask me ( in this case) i will surely include it among my top 5 greatest Malayalam movies of-all-time list And what a script! I went for it (with full family) with strong intentions to hate it, whether It be good or bad (My strong dislike towards my opp sex, though only towards a specific age group of females. Incase you still wonder… This movie is made by a female.)And i was so horribly wrong. And i never before had been so happy that my expectations were star crossed so much. I loved when i realised to be proved wrong. The movie is simply darn great. Its like LIFE.. like you truly watch it…. So much better than Arike … If you are gonna watch only one of em both, i would suggest this one..MASTERFILMMAKING……BLOWN AWAY….. Im overwhelmed, and i cannot churn out any more words, i got so much to say. But what my brain and my conscience is climbing hills.. Words are too weak a method to define the movie. Mainly because its not like any Malayalam movie you saw before. Its completely Life ! LIfe . LIFE… I’ll Scream at the top of my Lungs…. LIFEEEEE”
I posted the following after finding out you penned Usthad hotel.
” SCRIPT BY : Anjali Menon !!!!!!!!!!! The Women behind the only perfect movie in Malayalam (Manjadikuru). 100% sure minimum guarantee that itll be great!!! So damn excited !! Can’t wait!!! No one should miss Manjadikuru at big screen… And being a big fan of that splendid movie, ustad hotel fdfs kandillel njan chath povum…. P.S (TO ALL Malayalees) Watch better movies. Promote the revolution of good movies in Malayalam (started with Arike) and never let it die out. Diss poor made commercial junk and make Malayalam cinema a better FACE to look at. Only we can do that”
This is what i replied when one of my friends compared Manjadi with Traffic.
” Traffic is not that huge when comparing with Arike. And don’t even bother comparing with Manjadikuru.. That’s unbeatable as of now”
Im a 16 year old dangerously idiotic Movie buff/Novelist from Kerala. I’d rather die than watch/read crap. AND I NEVER DIE ;). Good day. Hoping Usthath hotel will satisfy.
Thanks so much for ‘Manjadikuru’. I caught up with a childhood friend after a long time yesterday and watching this movie made it all the more special.
Even we are ‘second generation Malayalee expatriates’ with difficulties in reading and writing Malayalam. We now work and spent our times in Kerala while our parents still live the life of expatriates. Our love for this place is indescribable since we haven’t spent our childhood or been educated here. The translation of these thoughts through a movie was truly magical. We couldn’t stop talking about it well after the movie was over.
God bless your creativity and best wishes for all future projects.
Just watched Manjaadikkuru. Thank you for this movie. The best movie in Malayalam, may be after Adaminte Makan Abu, which has Malayalam written all over it, unlike the other so called new wave movies which are all about western looking/aspiring Malayaalees.
Thank you for that wonderful background music, especially in the first half, which never felt like background score at all. It was like how the music is used in some French and central European movies.
Thank you for the synch sound – for all characters speaking mostly like in real life.
Thank you for the nice casting. All those children were excellent. I will never forget the smile of Roja in my life. brilliant actress she is. Kannan too have a heart warming smile. What an underrated and unused actor Rahman is.
Thank you so much for bringing up the plight of the Tamils in Kerala through this movie. I never expected, when every one told me it is nostalgic, a major stream of your story was looking at this aspect of Malayaalees. Unfortunately, Keralites do not like somebody telling them that they look down upon their neighbours and that Tamils are normal people. Karutha Pakshigal, the earlier movie which did this was rejected by Kerala. I sincerely hope this wont be the case with Manjaadikkuru.
And a big thank you for giving a simple and beautiful movie, with children at its heart.
I should mention though that there were more than a few moments when the movie looked like scenes out of an old MT sir script (that was a movie directed by IV Sasi with Seema Mammootty and all, though the perspective was different).
when will Urvashi learn to underplay nicely? I had a big arguement with my friend about this, who felt she did fine. May be, ok, but there was a character if well underplayed, would have taken it to another level.
The two songs in the second half felt like speed breakers. That sad song, especially, was quite cliched. We could find it repetitive, through out many movies in the 90’s. I am sure the movie would have been even better without these.
The beauty of the background score, was lost somewhere in the second half, may be. I am not sure, but I am going to watch it again.
Even if there are a few issues, it is still a truly beautiful movie, a gem for Malayalam. Thank you maam.
Please do not take a step backwards now.
All the best and peace for you.
chechi, manjadikkuru is touching. i remember my childhood. it is one of best filim i have ever seen. if it was released in april first, am sure its a super hit. most of the schools opened in may second. so most of the children aren’t see the movie. that means family didn’t see. another problem i saw is lack of publicity.

I Went out to see Manjadikkuru, yesterday which was a week day, from Ernakulam. Once I entered inside the theatre, I was a bit surprised as well as very glad to find that there were quite a sizeable crowd waiting for the movie, considering it was a week day and the movie didn’t have great publicity (other than the very positive mouth-publicity).
I’m a 22 year-old and was accompanied by my younger cousin. We’re usually used to another kinds of movies these days, that move at such fast pace. So this was a different experience.
Coming to the movie, it was an experience, a rather wonderful experience of having visited back our childhood and many memories related to that. Even with a thin storyline, you managed to tell many a things and plot some beautiful moments.
Towards the climax the film reached its peak. But there are minor glitches that I felt about the movie like it was a bit too slow at places (though I understand that it may have been neccessary to get that feel) and maybe a bit more roundup or a finishing touch could have been better to some of the side-by characters (i know there might have been practical constraints n all). Anyway these are minor points as i said, and I maybe even wrong in those.
However, all-in-all,you’ve done a brilliant job, especially as a new-comer in this field.
The acting was top class especially the 4 children and Urvashi. Great to see greats like Murali n Jagathy. I felt the script or the writing was the best part.
Your thoughts and sketches about memories and childhood and the various everyday characters are all fascinating. Although I haven’t lived outside Kerala, I’m also always fascinated to think of all these. Actually, even I’ve written a story about 3-4 yeas back while in college, which I named, “Ormayile Manjadikkurukkal”, which was also dealing with memories, past and village-home and all (ofcourse, otherwise no similarity to the movie). Needless to say, although completed, it hasn’t progressed out of my book shelf.
The best thing about the movie is that it has a Heart, which is something what most movies lack today. And also the art you created was deep, sensitive and poignant. Congrats. Waitin for your next venture and wish U all the best….
Hi Anjali,
Wish you all the very best.Loved the way Happy Journey was rendered.I am in Bangalore. Not sure whether Manjadikuru will be released here as well.
Just saw Manjadikuru and you deserve a standing ovation. The movie is so beautifully crafted. The kids were fantastic. Literally somthing was peaking from within towards the climax, may be forgone child hood.
This is MALAYALAM MOVIE AT ITS BEST. Will surely watch this movie some more(not one more) time.
Just one suggestion, these movies should be distributed in a better way. People should realize there are good movies and good movie makers around. In your home city calicut the film has only 1 show and that too at the costly crown. This is ordinary peoples’s extraordinary movie. Should have more shows and at a theatre were affordability wont be an issue.
After a long long (dont know how long ) time, after the great Padmarajan sir’s magic I have seen a MOVIE.
thanks a ton Anjali for this fantastic treat.
FINALLY WE HAVE SEEN A CINEMA WERE CINEMA IS THE HERO.
Why the theatres are changing the movies soon…I was wondering…From Happy Journey onwards I am ur great fan…………Thought to watch this movie during this vacation…inspired by my bro……………Unfortunately…the movie got changed from the theatres near to us…………….Now vacation got over…..Back to work…….Hope it will come to U.A.E. to refresh us………………………..
Hi Anjali,
I am Parvathy Anoop, a journalist with Deccan Herald, Bangalore.
It was sheer pleasure watching Manjadikuru and I could relate to so many incidents in my own childhood when I watched your movie.
Sending you a link to my review of your movie. http://www.deccanherald.com/content/259041/a-slice-life-seen-through.html
Hope to see many more.
All the best!
Dear dhanesh,
This has ref to your comment. See one point you said is right, the movie was not avble for so long, its just because of lack of publicity only. The film had all other features to be a trendsetter. Ms Anjali menon, the film would have been a revelation like traffic, if marketed well. Now that the film is of theatres please do the needful tp release the cd s of the same. Need to watch it again and again.
Regards,
Arun
MANJADIKURU HAD BEEN A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE . I HAVE WATCHED THE FILM TWICE.
IT WASN’T JUST AN ENTERTAINMENT ,IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE .CONGRATS TO ANJALI MENON, SHE IS INSPIRING .
Just saw Manjadikkuru from Innovative bangalore. Its a pity that a movie of this stature had to wait 4 years for a theatrical release. But it was worth the wait.
The movie is a celebration of innocence and thoroughly enjoyed the same. Thank you for making this movie.
I heard great reviews for the movie….really wanna see the film….I am staying abroad…..no release of this movie in theatres here………And cd’s are not available………The only option is downloading………….But see the cases happening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…………..Any other option for you to bring the movie to us……………I am sure if it is released in theatres in UAE……….audience will be more……….coz of the mouth publicity the movie achieved…………
I truely wanna miss this one…………….and please arrange…………………….
Now it has been 4-5 months,,,………..the movie has released…….we the expats have no options!!!!!!!
plse re release Manjadikuru on Attingallll Near Trivandrummmmm

Manjadikkuru -Heard a lot ,Read a lot,now searching a lot for the CD\DVD,Has it been released?I have got Ustaad Hotel DVD yesterday, plan it to watch on Diwali Day.One suggestion is try for an acknowledged remake of Cinema Paradiso(I feel it relates well with so many expat malayalis). You are a talented story teller who has the skill to narrate the story in a Keralite Setup.
Hope the movie comes out cd or dvd soon. the biggest problem i face living abroad is watching movies or getting hold of books in malayalam. Loved usthad hotel. waiting for manjadikkuru to come out.
what to say about this movie great, excellent, classic. What i could see in this film is me(Reghu) …and my heart felt so near to him… The kids remind me of innocence which i had… i was like that at time of my grandma’s funeral all i could see was acting, the change facial expression when entering the door where my grandma’s dead body is placed. so much to remind me, this movie made me to say sorry for every trouble of mine.
mam u r incredibly amazing.” manjadikuru ” can’t express my words its all beyond that it has reminded all the good moments of my childhood.i don’t know how to express my feelings now anyways thank you too much for this movie.but,i feel guilty now today only i have watched this movie but the days which have gone r also remembered by now.thqq mam lov u lotzz.. ๐ <3 <# :*
It was after watching Bangalore Days, I felt the urge to watch manjadikuru. While Bangalore days demonstrated three cousins who have been close since childhood faces the anxiety of adulthood. Manjadikuru showed a grownup man who revisits his ancestral house and past. Vicky reminisces the times he spent with his cousins and sadly realizes that everything has changed. The final scene where Vicky as a little boy departs the house, he was sad and confused to what was happening. I felt this movie had more soul than Bangalore days because it still emotionally haunts me. In fact, it reminds me of my own childhood. Something I was forced to leave behind.
I hope all expats including me will have chance to see this film…
Anjali, The car used as a taxi was Mark 1 Ambassador. In 1980 mark 3 was popular as taxi.
Dear Ma’am, thrilled to know that the film is releasing in this month.will there be a mumbai release??? could you pls let know?? ALL THE VERY BEST..

Warm regards and best wishes,
Arun Kumar

Dear dhanesh,
This has ref to your comment. See one point you said is right, the movie was not avble for so long, its just because of lack of publicity only. The film had all other features to be a trendsetter. Ms Anjali menon, the film would have been a revelation like traffic, if marketed well. Now that the film is of theatres please do the needful tp release the cd s of the same. Need to watch it again and again.
Regards,
Arun

Hi Ms Menon,
Just saw Manjadikkuru from Innovative bangalore. Its a pity that a movie of this stature had to wait 4 years for a theatrical release. But it was worth the wait.
The movie is a celebration of innocence and thoroughly enjoyed the same. Thank you for making this movie.
Regards,
Selson

I tried to watch the movie. Unfortunately i can’t. Now i want to buy the CD/DVD. Where can i get it? Its DVD/CD released or not?
HAI Ma’am
when you are going to release the dvd……………
what to say about this movie great, excellent, classic. What i could see in this film is me(Reghu) …and my heart felt so near to him… The kids remind me of innocence which i had… i was like that at time of my grandma’s funeral all i could see was acting, the change facial expression when entering the door where my grandma’s dead body is placed. so much to remind me, this movie made me to say sorry for every trouble of mine.
hats off to you…………………………………………….
A complete movie with an awesome climax… New generation movies r rocking the industry… BRAVO…
mam u r incredibly amazing.” manjadikuru ” can’t express my words its all beyond that it has reminded all the good moments of my childhood.i don’t know how to express my feelings now anyways thank you too much for this movie.but,i feel guilty now today only i have watched this movie but the days which have gone r also remembered by now.thqq mam lov u lotzz..
