Ustad Hotel opens

USTAD HOTEL opens – Today.

The expectations from this film nearly scare me. Lets admit it – its the first time that something I have written is being termed “commercial”.

I dont even know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing! As far as I am concerned, a story is a story is a story… but even about that the questions come pouring in…

is it a love story? is it a music band story? is it a food story? is it a family story?

The only correct answer is “all of the above”!

But at its core, USTAD HOTEL is a simple tale of relationships … the kind that you and I know about. 🙂

I shall end with a quote of Karimka in Ustad Hotel : “Every Sulaimani needs a bit of Mohabbat in it.”

So here it is for you – with love from us.  Really hope you like it!

Good luck! Expectations are definitely sky high, for several reasons. Whatever the box-office results, I think the winner is definitely Kerala cinema with the new crop of directors/actors.

Ustad hotel is a movie about 4stages of life.Beautifully written and directed. This movie is very carefully excecuted and is very much within the frames of a commercial malayalam movie. But luckily end being only a commercial movie.Actually it never ends.It just goes on like the waves of the ocean. The movie begins with Feyzee, his quest to breakfree from his businessman father to a life he has setup for himself. A life a young man would love to have but as the story progresses its told to the viewer that it was all a short lived and shortsighted dream. Usthad hotel is Feyzee ‘s journey to understand the real meaning of life. There lies the novelty of the subject. This movie underlines the four stages of life. Dulquer playing the youth,Sidique playing the middle age and thilakan playing vaanaprastham. The movie tells us whatever you have in your life still your life is incomplete. Usthad hotel bridges the gaps between our incomplete life without being preachy teaches you to live.Dulquer shines in a restrained performance never trying too hard or trying to be a comnercial hero.Nithya Menon is good.Thilakan shines in his role, the real hero of the movie.
Kudos to Anjali Menon for such a meaningful story.Anwar rasheeds conviction and brilliance to direct a different topic. A superb movie. Loved it. I think the movie will be a hit, cause Malayalam audience are a thinking audience and they dont need to be spoonfed.

  • vishnu June 29, 201210:09 pm

I heard a lot about manjadikuru but I didn’t see yet, now ustad hotel,
When we completely lost the feudal upper-class colonialism from our life, many movies came out to serve the same in silver screen. Now we are in another historic end, end of voluble relation’s here I take your view in my heart “Every Sulaimani needs a bit of Mohabbat in it.” No doubt Anwar rasheed is a proven director Anajali menon? Waiting to see how much mohabbat I can get from the ustad hotel sulaimani………

  • Suryan June 30, 20129:18 am

Every Sulaimani needs a bit of Mohabbat in it !!!

Ustad Hotel is one of the best movies I watched this year. Well portrayed story with genuine humor and makes this movie great.

oo dear …wht to say ..film was fantabulous….
dulqar with his charisma and body language excells as faizee.. thilakan back with a bang .. a veteran who can barely walk steals our heart with his mind blowing acting ..
all thanks for anwarjee and u for excellent direction and script ….

i never heard such a beautiful bg score in any of recent Malayalam movies..
    kudos to Gopisunder..

    USTAD HOTEL………….

a movie which correctly defines ‘new generation movies………….padam kalakki………….. everything was magnificiently perfect…………
but i have an opinion …….dont take it as crticism…………eventhough pictures showing tasty foods were ther there were no powerful dialogues to emphasize the tasteness and to make audience hungry……..just like there is a marvellous description about making appam and chicken curry in short story കാളവര്‍കി which mouth waters everyone …….the film was too good that there are no words to describe it………well done Anjali chechy……….waiting eagerly for the next venture …………….

My verdict about the movie : Its such an owesome treat, so just go & have it
    My rating : 7.75/10

    Excellent Script Anjali,

It turned out to be a good film and an entertainer. But Manjadi Kuru was exceptionally good. 🙂 Good work 😀

  • madhu murali July 3, 20123:51 pm

After watching a movie, this was the first time I have spend time to tell someone they have done a beautiful job. I am sure that the movie was so close to your heart . It might be your first commercial project but I am sure the story was never commercial to you. For me this movie told me what is the difference between a need and want. The direction and the crew were awesome but it was story that blow up my mind. Great work and I wish you come out with great scripts and project like this….

    Excellent job. Keep it up.

  • Billy John Thomas July 14, 20128:30 pm

    Dear Madam,

Appreciate your efforts in coming up with 2 good movies that touched my heart – Manjadikuru and Ustad Hotel. I just felt that the State Government should have run the movies tax free. After watching the movies, I was touched by the part in Ustad Hotel where you portrayed the differently abled children and the situation they are in. Just made be realise the value of life and good health.
Would like to visit these children sometime.

Thank you madam bringing out the movies – both entertaining and portraying a cause!

Loved the Sulaimaani. Thirsty for more.

  • Renjith Nair July 31, 20122:22 pm

Kudos Anjali…I have a feeling that you should have directed this film…..no one else can understand the un-written script you must be having in your mind about this story..had it been directed by you, would have naturally reflected in the film

  • Asha August 30, 201210:41 pm

    Hi Anjali,

watched Ustad Hotel for Thiruvonam!!! for me the definition of a movie has been demonstrated in this one….your narration of life’s simplicity is amazing and that too for the entire stretch of the movie, there wasnt even one dull moment….even the short story from Kerala Kafe was so gripping that to this day I laugh at the climax of that one!!! i havent seen Manjadikuru, but i for one as a gulf kid used to collect manjadikurus and have them stored…..there are so many stories linked to that collection…indeed seeds of memory for me…..Please do keep these simple stories coming…..wishing you the very best….and u are true inspiration!!!! Cheers….Asha

    Regarding the script……
Before writing any script you should learn the law of the land. But in your script is not logic in terms of legal point of view.In India we don’t have FDA.The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one of the United States federal executive departments. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescriptionand over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), andveterinary products. In your so lengthy and flat script, you have mentioned FDA in 2 tomes!.We have o FOOD & SAFETY DEPARTMENT only. The office of the Commissioner of Food Safety has been created for the implementation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. So, pls. keep in mind that viewers are not STUPIDS.

    • InseadGuy November 9, 20124:16 am

Oh please, readers are not stupid, agreed. It is also very very safe to assume that all the readers/viewers do not go to cinema with a Ph.d in Food Safety and Health Adminisation.
By over simplification of the topic Anjali’s wonderful script helped the director to convert story into a canvas. Please understand that. Nothing wrong in it and does not have to be technical correct as well.

    • Thariq July 1, 20146:28 pm

Dude, out of the whole movie, this is the error you found out. Who the hell cares FDA is in India or not. Watch the movie for its story, its screen play, its bgm and music, its characters, acting and foremost the direction. Its one of the best movies to have come out in malayalam in recent times.

  • K Govindan Nampoothiry October 23, 201212:04 pm

    Dear Anjali Menon,

I watched Ustad Hotel previous day. After watching that movie, I feel disappointed. Because, I couldn’t watch this ‘simple but a touching movie’ at cinemas. May be I am unlucky…

The way you narrated the bonding between Thilakan and Dulquer Salmaan was amazing. Even though there were logical mistakes (For instance, Dulquer stealing the confidential document from PA’s cabin, the death of Thilakan etc), totally the movie has come out well. The message of serving food to needy people is the highlight, thanks a ton for adding that relevant subject in script. As you mentioned in one of our posts, Thilakan proved that he is an Ustad in acting. Once again he conquered our hearts, it is hard to believe that he is no more….I couldn’t stop my tears when he said – “Povandorku eppayaalum poye pattu”. His combination scenes with Dulquer were so touching.

Appreciates you for scripting such a nice movie and your camera man for excellent shots.

    Hi Anjali,

I thought you did a fantastic job with Ustad Hotel. It was great to see a Malayalam movie which was able to pull together three different generations, as well as varying cultural backdrops and sensibilities so effortlessly without losing any of the subtle nuances of each. At it’s heart , it’s really is movie about relationships which, in it’s own unique way, could apply to anywhere and to anyone. I enjoyed the movie very much and I’m looking forward to seeing your future offerings.
    Well done! 🙂

There is a Sufi song used during end titles,
    anybody know that song’s name?

  • Anish krishnan June 30, 201310:53 pm

The only movie that made me cry for days, because that was the life i was dreaming about (thilakan’s) after 45, where the men want’s to status and money to show everyone how big they are. All i wanted have is such a life. I wanted to study hotel management but as per my parents suggestion i had to join my mca that was the first reason that stroke me, the next was that i love food, not like having a bulky stomach, but like to discover more and more tastes and present the taste to others. The part where which my heart broke was, the children giving thanks to him. And that is not just a tear i felt when my college took me to a orphanage, and i couldn’t recognize that thanks gave by those children.

    thumps up to this movie

    Hi Anjali,
First and foremost I am not a malyalee, I am a Odiya who loves movies
I discovered your work by hearing from my Mallu freinds while they were discussing about this road movie by “Dulquer Salmaan” I saw the movie and liked it and that made me watch Ustad Hotel with english subtitiles. I was not able to make the nitty gritty of the movie but I loved the movie premise and the story telling was very good (as per my understanding).
Keep up the good work and will some day see Bangalore Day’s
PS: As happy as I am watching such a nice malyalee movie, I am that much sad on the way my own Odiya movie industry is taking. hoping for the day when some mallu will write a similar comment for a Odiya movie

  • Jessy George October 20, 201411:04 pm

Anjali, was recommended to watch your movie.. and boy oh boy did i love it!! Write from the start till the finish, every shot is flawless. Kudos to you for bringing back my hope in malayalam movies. Watched Bangalore Days as well and loved it too. All the actors have contributed to making these movies a success. Look forward to watching more interesting work from you.
